Mirth Merchant
John Hussein Brown aka Mirth Merchant is a cartoonist and illustrator living in Houston, Texas. His featured work includes pen and ink drawings, with various characters who are largely drawn from his imagination. He enjoys reading comics, cartoons, illustration and of course, drawing them. His favorite artists include Jack Kirby, Alex Toth and Charles Addams, just to name a few.
Artist’s Statement:
These are small pen and ink drawings from recent sketchbooks.
Most were begun with little thought to subject matter or composition. I habitually doodle things like this, sometimes with an eye towards a more conventional end, (such as when I’m drawing an actual illustration or a comic story) and sometimes for more mundane reasons; I’m killing time, I’m making sure my pen has ink, I’m hoping to solve some visual problem.
As such, this artwork is largely unconscious. It’s also fun for me because I often don’t know what I’m drawing until I’m done.
