Jaleh Afshar
Jaleh Afshar was born in Los Angeles, California and currently lives in Salt
Lake City, Utah, where she will be graduating from the University of Utah
with a BFA in graphic design. She spends most of her time painting and
creating kinetic type, while also working at Fighting Dinosaur, a SLC
advertising agency. Aside from design work, she also enjoys taking care of
her rabbit, named Bunny.
Jaleh’s inspiration: My work stems from a love of typography as well as comic-style portraiture and technical object renderings. There should not be a divide between what is “graphic design” and what is “fine art”, and I try to present that through my work.
I’m also fascinated by the appearance of collages, however, I feel that utilizing only found objects to make up an entire piece is bordering plagiarism and is, quite frankly, too easy. Because of that, when I mimic the look of collage in some of my pieces, I create all the elements on my own, sans very subtle background parts, such as graph paper or dress
patterns.
Materials: Acrylic and ink always! Plus the occasional pieces of tape +
paper + gouache.
